THE BASKETROOM | Msing I Teal Colour Block Woven Basket
Use your new woven storage basket for keeping hair accessories, makeup up, and toiletries organized, or fill it with fruit, stationery, children’s toys, remote controls, and gloves and hats. These round sisal baskets also make beautiful woven planters for your houseplants – and excellent new home gifts. Wherever and however you choose to use your new woven basket it is sure to bring a splash of vibrant Kenyan colour to your home.
The Basket Room has built long-established relationships with weaving groups in several rural corners of Africa, and the skilled craftswomen in this particular women’s weaving group are brilliant at producing these repeat design baskets in a kaleidoscope of stunning color block combinations. The women behind our color block baskets have woven from a young age: this careful, traditional craft is passed along the female line, from grandmothers to mothers to daughters. Sisal grass is sourced ready-rolled and hand-dyed in large vats before a traditional twining method is used to produce each handwoven basket. Where once these women used to have to travel to Nairobi to sell their woven baskets, today, The Basket Room places regular and fairly paid orders with this group, and completed baskets are stored in purpose-built mud huts before being shipped by container to the UK.
Basket weaving within a group empowers women to support their families with a flexible income in the dry seasons, where subsistence farming becomes unsustainable. Your purchases support this good work.
