Introduce warm and rustic tones to your home with a BONGO basket made from handwoven milulu grass and colored with all-natural dyes. The weavers who make these ethical baskets use them in their own homes for storing food like maize, potatoes, and onions. BONGO baskets also work well as woven planters and can be used throughout the home to organize toiletries, cutlery, baby supplies, and even hats, gloves, and slippers.

These baskets are woven by craftswomen in Tanzania who are part of village cooperatives. The earthy colors of BONGO baskets come from natural dyes made from two plants found in the region of Njombe, southwest Tanzania. The roots of the likenekene plant and leaves of the linywaugimbi plant are pounded, boiled in water, and then added to the boiling water with milulu grass. The grass is removed, dried, and woven into baskets. The milulu grass used for weaving is found locally in swamps and riverbeds, and some cooperatives specifically grow it.

The income earned by the weavers from selling these baskets helps their families with expenses like school fees, medical bills, home improvements, and buying livestock. Weaving also provides a source of income during dry seasons when other earnings may be limited. The cooperative committee members lead basket sales, and the profits are reinvested in the communities for things like solar lighting, land, warehouses, and more raw materials to make more baskets.
